Compass error
What do you need to work out?
Error logbook
1. Variation
Read from photoPhotograph the ECDIS or chart variation rose with the year and annual change in view.
Check or edit the values
Annual change toward E or W is the way the variation moves each year. A chart bracket such as (8′E) is toward E. "Decreasing" on a West variation is also toward E. ECDIS shows West as negative, so a variation of −4° with a change of −7′ is 4°W moving 7′ a year toward W.

Enter deviation by hand
Compass to True: add East, subtract West. True to Compass: subtract East, add West. Compass least, error east. Compass best, error west.
Deviation table
LoadingLooking for your saved table.
Scan the card with your phone, copy the text, then paste it below. On Android, open Google Lens, tap Text, then Select all and Copy. On iPhone, point the camera at the card, tap the Live Text icon, then Select All and Copy.
Then type only the deviation for each heading and choose E or W. Rows you leave empty are skipped.
Show saved table
Fill the frame with the table, hold the phone square to the card and avoid glare. If the table is long, pick two photos. Check every row before saving.
Calculation aid only. Photos are read by AI and can be misread, so check every value against the chart and the card. Results do not replace ECDIS or your Master's orders. Check results before they go in the log.
Error by observation
Compare the compass or gyro with a true bearing.
Bearing and observed reading
True bearing comes from a sun or star azimuth, a charted transit, or ECDIS. Error is True minus observed.
Calculation aid only. Photos are read by AI and can be misread, so check every value against the chart and the card. Results do not replace ECDIS or your Master's orders. Check results before they go in the log.
Garbage calculator
Bags discharged in. Volume by category out.

Liquids (litres)
Cooking oil is Category D and counts in the garbage total. The others are not garbage and are listed separately.
Other categories (cubic metres)
Added on top of the bags. Not saved, so they clear when you reload.
Estimates only. Volume = bags × bag size × fill × share. Oil, sludge, bilge water and sewage are not Annex V garbage: they belong in the Oil Record Book or under Annex IV, as your company procedures say. Check the figures against what the port receipt and your Garbage Record Book require.

GMDSS
Stations for your radio checks, by position.

DSC test stations
Nearest first. Stations read from your copy of the Master Plan link to the page they came from. Your own entries are marked as yours.

NAVTEX in range
Planning aid only. NAVAREA limits here are simplified. NAVTEX stations come from Wikipedia's list and DSC stations are the ones you entered, so confirm every MMSI, frequency and time in ALRS Volume 5 before relying on it. Map: OpenStreetMap.
MARPOL
What do you need?
MARPOL map
Enter a position
Degrees and minutes (43 35.2 N), degrees only (43.5867), or with a minus sign for S and W.
Indicative only. Shore distances come from public coastline data and special area outlines are drawn from the IMO descriptions, so confirm anything close to a limit on ECDIS and the official chart. Coastal states, protected areas, your flag and your company can be stricter. Map: OpenStreetMap. Sea marks: OpenSeaMap. Coastline: Natural Earth.
Passage planning

Waypoints, legs and sections
Courses and distances are rhumb lines on WGS84. Tick New section at a waypoint to split the passage, for example port to port.
More options
Untick to get fuel changeover reminders at emission control area boundaries.
How far each side of the track the app looks in your publications for VTS, reporting, regulations and restricted areas.
Ship's clock at departure, at the top, is the time the yacht keeps when leaving. It starts at the zone for the departure longitude, which can differ from legal time in port. The clock then moves one hour at each time zone boundary by longitude (15° bands).

Navigational warnings
Current NGA broadcast warnings for your route are loaded automatically. The app reads the positions in each warning and shows the ones inside your search corridor.

For coastal warnings and areas NGA does not cover, copy the text (SeaLagom has a free text export) and paste it here.
GMDSS for this route
Worked out from simplified boundaries, so near a limit confirm in ALRS Volume 5.
Not included: DSC coast stations, sea areas A1 and A2, and rescue centre contacts. They are not in the free sources, so use ALRS Volume 5 or the GMDSS Master Plan.
Planning aid only. Verify every item on ECDIS and in your official publications before use. Special area outlines and shore distances are indicative: they come from the IMO descriptions and public coastline data, which is coarse near harbours and narrow channels. TSS, VTS and reporting items are the book's own words, found by matching the positions printed in your publications to the route. Their positions are approximate, the books do not list everything, and editions go out of date, so cross-check against ALRS and the chart. Area and traffic separation outlines: OpenStreetMap sea mark data, mapped by volunteers. Map: OpenStreetMap. Sea marks: OpenSeaMap. Coastline: Natural Earth.

Settings
Connect a free Google Gemini key so the app can read photos of your deviation card and the chart variation.
Gemini key
Not set- On a computer or your phone, open aistudio.google.com and sign in with a Google account.
- Choose Get API key, then Create API key. No payment card is needed.
- Copy the key. It is a long string starting with AIza.
- Paste it below and tap Save key. Then tap Test key.
Use a Gemini Flash model with no Paid badge in AI Studio. Default is gemini-3.8-flash.
The key is stored only in this browser and is sent only to Google. Keep it private. Anyone with it can use your quota. Photos you scan go to Google, and on the free tier Google may use them to improve its products, so scan only things like the deviation card and chart.
